It’s that time of year to see what our artists are adding to their repetoire and we’re pretty excited to have our orders in!
At Avant-Garden Shop, we’ve spent the last 22 years stocking our shelves to reflect our landscape. Anytime we can replace an internationally-made item with a Canadian-made one, we do. Here are some new wonderful new finds we’ve ordered. (They’re not in the shop yet, so consider this a tease.)
Pamela Brouwer, Genius Premium Craft Company, Bedford NOVA SCOTIA
Pamela puts together whimsical DIY craft kits for you to create some of the most delightful creatures, including a bunny with pilot goggles, a seagull with a satchel of french fries and black cats inspired by the art of Maud Lewis. All you need are scissors, glue and a comfy chair.
Wynand van Niekerk, The Downtown Sketcher, Halifax NOVA SCOTIA
Wynand’s sketches include iconic landmarks in Halifax NS, Charlottetown PEI, St. John’s NFLD, Quebec City, PQ and Toronto ON, and soon…Peterborough!
We look forward to offering greeting cards, magnets and totes with images of buildings and special spaces that make Peterborough one of a kind.
Amanda Brown, The Scarlett Dahlia, Saskatoon SASKATCHEWAN
Cloths for kitchens or bodies in a gamut of beautiful colours. After 20 years in the commercial fashion industry, Amanda Brown has transitioned into a career as a sustainable textile artist, running a near-zero-waste business in the procurement of textiles and natural fibres and through to recycling, repurposing any scrap fabrics into new yarn.
Kathy Evans, Creativity in Glass, Innisfil, ONTARIO
We’ll conclude this chapter of Made in Canada with an update on the work of Kathy Evans, an Ontario artist whose work we already carry in the store. The fused glass sun-catchers, tea-light shades and light switch covers are all big sellers in the shop. She’s come out with some delightful new designs, including the adorable owls, pictured above. We hope they arrive in the shop soon!
