The Avant-Garden Shop: Your Garden & Bird Store

GARDEN GATE: Episode 311 – Why it’s important to support Canadian artists (January 31st, 2025)

We’ve been hearing a lot about “buy Canadian” lately. It’s so great to see this support coming to the forefront. We have so many talented Canadian artists in our country, so why not support them? We have beautiful works from artists across the country. Over the 22 years that we’ve been in business we’ve been building up our offerings. Anytime we can replace a non-Canadian made item with a Canadian made one, we do.

Here’s a tour across the country of items we carry in the shop!

We have kids hats hand made in Newfoundland.

Pewter, greeting cards and crafting kits from Nova Scotia.

Wind chimes from both PEI and Nova Scotia. Pottery mugs, jewelry, soap, greeting cards, garden art, metal art, sculptures, garden hats, pewter, bird feeders, fused glass, coasters, puzzles, creams, switch plate covers, puppets and earrings from Ontario.

Garden furniture, and greeting cards made in Quebec.

Glass angels, dragonfly ornaments and bird seed from Manitoba.

Pottery and dish cloths from Saskatchewan.

Crystal Driedger and Lisa Brawn art cards from Alberta.

Wall art from a few artists in BC, as well as the Garden bandit weeding tool, wildflower seeds and carving kits.

We’re missing NB and the territories so it’s always a work in progress! But we’re dedicated to continue to add to our offerings with a priority for Canadian made as we have been for 22 years. We have even more products designed by Canadian artists that are produced in other countries. For example, most fabric comes from India, so a cloth bag may have a design by a Canadian artist imprinted on a bag from India.

When we choose to support these Canadian artists and buy local the CFIB says 66 cents of every dollar stays in the community. The taxes we pay locally go to support services we need like road repairs, schools, parks, public programs and public safety. When you support local retail shops those shops can hire staff, support local fundraisers, pay taxes for local services. You can speak to the owners and local staff and learn more about the products they sell and also how they in turn support the community. Local helping local! We hope that you’ll continue to support local and support Canadian. It’s so important now more than ever.
