The Avant-Garden Shop: Your Garden & Bird Store

Canada’s Got Talent

As a downtown business owner, it’s easy to see the benefits of shopping local.

Whenever we sell ?original art and gift items created by local?, Canadian artists and companies, we see that money going into their pockets; real pockets of real people who are eager ?to re-invest in their own communities by supporting local health, arts, and sports initiatives.

Just as when our shop fares well, allowing us to continue employing local (and wonderful) staff and continue donating to important local causes, from food banks to fundraisers, that are meaningful to us and our customers.

When those businesses prosper, so do their communities.

Take a Guess

In 2023, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business asked Canadian shoppers to guess how much money stays local when shopping at a large retailer with a physical location, such as Walmart: on average Canadians said 37 cents.

Most respondents also estimated that 38 cents on average stays in the community when buying from a small business.

Sound right or way off? What’s your guess?

While you’re thinking of your response and before we show you the correct answer, we’ll beautify some space with images from ?just a few of the Canadian artists featured in our shop:

Wood Designs by Arbour, Nova Scotia
Anvil Island - Murder of Crows on Stand
Anvil Island Design, BC
Dog Bite Steel, Uxbridge Ontario

Were You Close?

Most people were way off.

In fact, far from 37/38¢ staying in the community from every dollar spent at a big box/ local shop, the difference was significant, according to the study:

“For every dollar spent at a small business, 66 cents on average stays local, according to new data from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB). Conversely, only 11 cents of every dollar spent stays in the community when consumers shop at a large multinational business.” (Source:  http://tiny.cc/weoyzz)

We’ve been compared to  Peterborough’s version of the “One of a Kind” show, so when you next come into the shop, see if you agree and enjoy your own cross country tour. ??
